Miami Cannibal Could Have Been on Some Newfangled, Undetectable Drug

Yesterday, the world found out that Miami cannibal Rudy Eugene only had marijuana, and no other drugs, in his system when he decided to chew off a man’s face five weeks ago. Which was actually kind of unsettling. If it wasn’t a drug, then maybe Eugene just snapped. Maybe any of us could turn into a bloodthirsty cannibal zombie at any time. But it’s also possible, maybe even likely, that Eugene had other drugs in his system after all, according to Dr. Bruce Goldberger, professor and director of toxicology at the University of Florida:

There are many of these synthetic drugs that we currently don’t have the methodology to test on, and that is not the fault of the toxicology lab. The challenge today for the toxicology lab is to stay on top of these new chemicals and develop methodologies for them but it’s very difficult and very expensive.” Goldberger said. “There is no one test or combination of tests that can detect every possible substance out there.”

It’s probably best, in the end, that we don’t know what Eugene was on that day. We have a feeling that the publicity over Eugene’s supposed use of bath salts only served to introduce more people to the formerly obscure drug for the first time. Whatever Eugene was really on, if he was on something, would probably just become another fad.
