As anyone who has ever had the privilege of driving through New Jersey knows, there are many reasons to like Wawa: the weird name, the excellent coffee, its general superiority to rival East Coast convenience store Sheetz. (Taking sides is fun.) Mitt Romney, whose tour bus paid a visit to one of the chain’s Quakerstown, Pennsylvania, locations yesterday (after narrowly avoiding former Democrat governor Ed Rendell, who was holding an event outside the Wawa Romney initially intended to hit) likes the way the chain serves as “a model of innovation in the private sector.” While there, the Republican candidate also ordered and consumed a hoagie in an effort to override his image as someone who would never, ever eat anything that came from a gas station.
