Sudanese national Ibrahim al-Qosi was released to his home country on Wednesday after a ten-plus-year stay at El Hotel Guantánamo Bay. Osama bin Laden’s one-time jack-of-all-trades — driver, bodyguard, cook, and supplier — al-Qosi had been detained at Guantánamo since his capture in December 2001. In 2010, he pleaded guilty at a military commission for charges of conspiracy and supporting terrorism, and received a fourteen-year sentence that was reduced to two years, considering time served. ABC News reports that his release makes him the first detainee convicted under the Obama administration’s revised military policies to be transferred back home. Al-Qosi is going to have to figure out how to manage his references once he updates the résumé.
