A passenger on a Delta flight from JFK to Madrid Thursday night alerted the flight crew to suspicious wiring in the bathroom, causing the plane to circle back to the airport after it had reached about 100 miles east of Martha’s Vineyard over the Atlantic Ocean, according to multiple reports. The FBI and a bomb squad searched the plane with 206 passengers aboard and found a wire threaded through a drinking straw (cheap headphones?!) on the floor of the plane’s bathroom, and determined that the wires were “non-explosive” but “did not belong to the plane.”
The timing of the wire discovery is actually unclear as CBS New York writes that the plane returned to JFK because of a sick passenger, at which point officials found the wiring. Police evacuated the plane and questioned two passengers who were later released.
