Mitt Romney’s most recent explanation for his refusal to release more than twoish years of tax returns, as told to Parade, is that his charitable giving is just too private. “Our church doesn’t publish how much people have given. This is done entirely privately,” he explained. “One of the downsides of releasing one’s financial information is that this is now all public, but we had never intended our contributions to be known. It’s a very personal thing between ourselves and our church.”
And Mike Huckabee. And everyone in the Tampa Bay Times Forum. And everyone who listens to or reads about Mike Huckabee’s RNC speech. Because when Mike Huckabee wants to juxtapose Romney’s generosity against the cheapness of Joe Biden — who, by the way, has held the title of the poorest senator in the country — then, suddenly, the details of Romney’s charitable giving are no longer sacred.
Speaking of budgets, Joe Biden’s budget shows that while he wants to be generous with your money through higher taxes and government spending, for years he gave less than two-tenths of one percent of his money to charity.
He just wants you to give the government more so he and the Democrats can feel better about themselves. Mitt Romney has given over 16 percent of his income to his church and charity, and I’d feel better about having a leader who gives more of his own money instead of mine.
So now that Romney’s surrogates are bragging about his charitable giving in campaign-vetted, nationally televised speeches, Romney can release some more tax returns, right?
