This is both endearing and informative: Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor stopped by the set of Sesame Street to chat with Abby Cadabby (and all the kids and immature adults watching at home) about the meaning of the word “career.” As Sotomayor explained, “A career is a job you train for, or prepare for and plan on doing for a long time.” When Abby responded by sharing her dream of growing up to be a princess, Sotomayor let her in on the cold, hard truth. “Pretending to be a princess is fun,” she said. “But it is definitely not a career.” She then helpfully listed some other avenues one could pursue (teacher, lawyer, engineer, and doctor are all legitimate choices, in case you were wondering) and didn’t even get offended when Abby asked her if she herself had a career. “I do,” Sotomayor said patiently. “I went to school and studied law and then became a judge.” Sounds easy enough.
