The first fifteen awards paid out Tuesday by the $2.8 billion September 11th Victim Compensation Fund ranged from $10,000 to $1.5 million each for fourteen firefighters and one correction officer who responded following the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. They received ten percent of the awarded amount to start out with, just in case the fund doesn’t have enough for all the awards that will be paid out between now and 2016 when it expires. The biggest awards “represented lost income for firefighters who were relatively young and mostly or completely disabled.”
