After pleading guilty to drunk driving charges in an Alexandria, Virginia court on Friday, the Idaho Republican — and nominally teetotaling Mormon — apologized again for his Christmastime DUI bust, which, he said, “brought embarrassment and shame to me, my family and other church members who care about me.” Crapo told reporters that he was drinking vodka tonics (as opposed to straight shots, as had been previously reported) before he decided to get behind the wheel in an attempt to “wind down” after a night of hanging at home by himself. He also said this was “the first time and the last time” he had driven while intoxicated. We’re willing to believe one of those things, but not the other.
