Bin Laden’s Son-in-Law Will Have a New York Trial

Instead of being droned overseas or shipped to Guantánamo like most of his associates, Osama bin Laden’s son-in-law Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, an alleged Al Qaeda spokesman, will be tried right here in New York City. Ghaith is due in civilian court today to face charges that he conspired to kill Americans and could be sentenced to life in prison. The decision to hold him locally has sparked some of the same opposition from Republicans that got the 9/11 plotters’ trial moved, but most can’t summon the energy: Former Community Board 1 chairwoman and aspiring Manhattan borough president Julie Menin, a key figure in the previous resistance, said, “I think it is a very different situation.”
