Alt-Weekly Plague Kills Boston Phoenix

The struggles of alternative weeklies everywhere are being felt hardest in Boston today, where the 47-year-old Phoenix, first home to many a young journalist, has announced it will close after a final print edition tomorrow and an online-only issue next week. Publisher Stephen Mindich said in a statement, “these have been extremely difficult times for our Company and despite the valiant effort by many, many past and current staff to attempt to stabilize and, in fact, reverse our significant financial losses, we have been unable to do so and they are no longer sustainable.” Sister papers in Portland and Providence will soldier on, while Boston signed off, “Good night and good luck.”
