It turns out the strategy of purposefully flouting campaign laws so that you can sue the city and change them, while original, does not work. Mayoral candidate George T. McDonald told the New York Times on Sunday he was giving up on his plan to raise more money than the law allows. In part that was because the process of suing to change that law was moving too slow. Also, the tactic pretty much backfired as donors feared they would run afoul of campaign laws too. “One contributor has already asked for the money back,” the Times reports. So now that McDonald’s ready to raise funds the old-fashioned way, he’s late to the party and lagging in the money race. Poor guy cannot get the timing right in this election.
