The police shootout that killed gunman Kurt Myers after his standoff in an abandoned bar in Herkimer, NY, also cut short the career of a young FBI dog who was only in his second week on the job. The 2.5-year-old Czech German shepherd, Ape, carried a camera into the room ahead of the team that stormed Myers’s hideout. But when Ape reached the doorway, Myers shot him. According to the New York Times report, that shot started the exchange that brought Myers down: “Officers returned fire, killing the gunman, Kurt Myers, and then turned to try to save Ape. They performed CPR on the dog as he was rushed in an armored vehicle to a nearby veterinary office.” It was Ape’s second mission, according to the Associated Press, and he was the second tactical FBI dog killed in the line of duty.
