Government Gives Up on Horrifying Cigarette Warning Labels

American smokers can continue to enjoy their cigarettes without staring at the possible consequences, as the U.S. government is abandoning its legal battle to place disturbing warning labels on cigarette packs. In March, a federal appeals court agreed with several big tobacco companies that requiring them to carry the warnings violates the First Amendment, and now Attorney General Eric Holder says the government will not ask the Supreme Court to review the decision. Instead, the FDA will try to come up with new, less gruesome warning labels, which could take years.
