Long Island Hospital Films Workers’ Hand-Washing

The depressing thing about a system that automatically films employees’ hand-washing habits at Long Island’s North Shore Hospital and a handful of other medical facilities is how effective it is. According to the New York Times, when workers were being filmed but not told about it, “hand-hygiene rates were less than 10 percent.” When they started learning they were being filmed not washing their hands, “the rates rose to 88 percent.” Whatever the reason behind hospital workers’ reluctance to get soapy, they wash up a lot less often than you’d want them to.
