Facebook, which has recently been in the news for giving user data to the government, accidentally released six million people’s contact information to other users, the company announced in a Friday night news dump. According to a statement, a technical glitch that began in 2012 allowed users who downloaded e-mail addresses and phone numbers from their friends list to obtain unauthorized information from other members of the social network. While the bug only affected a fraction of Facebook’s 1.1 billion profiles, a company spokesman acknowledged, “It’s still something we’re upset and embarrassed by, and we’ll work doubly hard to make sure nothing like this happens again.” Facebook said it became aware of the situation last week and fixed it within 24 hours, and added that they “currently have no evidence that this bug has been exploited maliciously.” So, now you know how your weird middle school ex managed to booty call you the other night.
