NYPD officer Joseph Koch, 29, got a chance to impress his future in-laws when he bolted from a barbecue at his fiancé’s father’s house in Jamaica on Sunday night to help a neighbor calling for help. A 10-year-old boy ran out to Koch, screaming, “He’s trying to kill my mother.” Police say that inside the house the woman was being beaten by ex-boyfriend Jose Bernazard. He allegedly rushed Koch when he entered the home, and in the ensuing struggle the officer’s gun went off three times. Koch was shot in the left hand, and the ex-boyfriend was hit in the abdomen. Bernazard is in critical condition and has yet to be arrested or charged.
