Contradicting two state psychiatrists, on Monday Dr. Karen Rosenbaum, a forensic psychiatrist called by the defense, testified that alleged “killer nanny” Yoselyn Ortega is not fit to stand trial. Rosenbaum interviewed Ortega in November, several weeks after the children in her care were stabbed to death. She said the nanny didn’t know why she was handcuffed to her hospital bed, what she was charged with, or even what year it was. “When I asked if she wanted to live or die, she began to sob and said, ‘I don’t know,’” Rosenbaum testified. “She also had been hearing voices, saying we’re going to kill a lot of people. Multiple voices — male and female — addressing her, who she didn’t recognize.”
