Watch Governors Island’s Tallest Building Implode

New York City’s first controlled implosion since 2001 took place on Sunday at 7:30 a.m., when 250 pounds of explosives were used to level an eleven-story building on Governors Island. The 45-year-old former U.S. Coast Guard dorm — the island’s tallest structure until it this morning — fell in just twenty seconds to make way for a softball field in the new 30-acre park currently under construction there.
