American Marines Accidentally Bombed the Great Barrier Reef

Two American AV-8B Harrier jets in Australia for a training exercise were forced to drop four bombs near the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park earlier this week. The U.S. 7th Fleet admitted this weekend that the pilots had to let go of the weapons after discovering that they were low on fuel and unable to land while carrying them. In an attempt to minimize possible damage to the reef, they did aim 164 feet away from the coral. Luckily, none of the four bombs (two inert and two unarmed explosive) exploded, but there’s still time to ruin the endangered reef as the three-week training continues.
