Council Synchronizing Vacations to Override Bloomberg’s NYPD Bill Veto

Mayor Bloomberg has said all along he would veto two City Council bills creating an NYPD inspector general and making it easier to sue for profiling, and on Tuesday, he did so, right in the middle of peak summer vacation season for council members who’ve promised to override the veto. The council has enough votes to override the veto, but barely, and Bloomberg has been on a behind-the-scenes campaign to turn at least one council member. Nobody has publicly changed their position on the issue, but if they miss the vote, that would have the same effect.”That’s why we’ve been organizing everybody’s vacation schedule together,” bill sponsor Jumaane Williams told the New York Times. The paper predicted the council vote will come shortly after the verdict in the current NYPD stop-and-frisk suit — and sometime before the end of beach season.
