Pennsylvania Sued Over Gay-Marriage Ban

Troy Brunet (L) waves a flag as celebrations ensue in the Castro neighborhood of San Francisco, California, June 26, 2012, after the US Supreme Court struck down The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), and declared that same-sex couples who are legally married deserve equal rights to the benefits under federal law that go to all other married couples. In another ruling, the Supreme Court cleared the way for same-sex marriages to resume in California as the justices, in a procedural ruling, turned away the defenders of Proposition 8.

The ACLU’s lawsuit hopes to turn Pennsylvania from the only state in the northeast that bans gay marriage and does not allow civil unions into the fourteenth state in the nation to legalize gay marriage. The filing — on behalf of ten gay couples, two children, and a widow from a same-sex couple — is not directly tied to the Supreme Court’s recent DOMA ruling, but it does quote the decision, which said a marriage ban denies couples “a dignity and status of immense import.”
