Quinn, a Soda-Ban Opponent, Wants a Kids-Meal Crackdown

Christine Quinn never cottoned to Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s unsuccessful plan to ban big sodas in New York. But now she’s proposing a similar-sounding ban of her own, on kids meals at chain restaurants that don’t comply with nutritional guidelines. So how does she square that? The difference, Quinn said on Monday, is that she’s not looking to ban the contents of kids’ meals— grilled cheese sandwiches, french fries, and so on— just the labeling that suggests they’re good for kids: “If you’re gonna send that message to parents that this meal is good for a child, we’re going to make sure that we actually know it’s good for a child.” Just how good it has to be has yet to be determined.
