Ruth Bader Ginsburg will become the first Supreme Court Justice to officiate a same-sex marriage Saturday night, when she marries her longtime friend and Kennedy Center president Michael M. Kaiser and his fiancé, economist John Roberts. The wedding will take place in front of over 200 guests at the performing arts center. As the Washington Post points out, this is just the beginning of Ginsburg’s career as a gay wedding officiant. Of her new ability to preside over such ceremonies, she said, “I think it will be one more statement that people who love each other and want to live together should be able to enjoy the blessings and the strife in the marriage relationship.” The 80-year-old judge was also asked to officiate the wedding of Post contributor David Hagedorn but waited until June 26, the day the court announced its DOMA decision, to accept. Now that the ruling has been put into effect, Ginsburg and her fancy collar will be at the nuptials in September.
