The New York Times’ Top War Photographer Just Happened to Be in Nairobi Yesterday

As he explained in a short interview with his own newspaper, Tyler Hicks was picking up some photographs at a shop near the Westgate Mall when it was attacked by armed terrorists yesterday. He ran to the scene and began taking photos with “a small camera that I always have with me in case something happens” until he was able to get his protective gear and professional cameras so he could document the ongoing hostage situation, which has left at least 59 people dead, from the inside. Hicks said he spent around two hours trailing a group of police as they searched the mall for civilians and attempted to locate the shooters; the rest of his day was spent capturing what went on outside. You can see his incredible, terrifying images on the Times website
