Continuing the recent mini-trend of people doing crazy, dangerous, and ultimately fatal things in and around federal spaces (see Washington D.C. car-rammer and self-immolator), police in Wheeling, West Virginia, killed an ex-cop who opened fire on the federal building there, fortunately hitting nobody. The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register identified the shooter as Thomas Piccard, 55, a 20-year veteran of the Wheeling Police Department, who reportedly “positioned himself in a parking lot across the street from the Federal Building and opened fire.” He fired twenty times before police and building security shot him fatally. Scary stuff.
