A gunman carrying a rifle and reportedly wearing a helmet opened fire inside the Westfield Garden State Plaza in Paramus, New Jersey on Monday night. A witness speaking to WPIX said he heard the gunman say, “I’m not going to hurt you,” before firing twice into the air. Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli said 20-year-old Richard Shoop fired six shots but did not intend to harm anyone because “he did have opportunity to shoot people and did not.”

Police and SWAT swarmed the mall and later found Shoop’s body nearby, dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound with a note on him.
