other countries' embarrassments

September 11 Costumes Won a Halloween Contest in the U.K.

It took about a week for the news to make it to American shores, but Britain wants us to know we are not the only global superpower when it comes to appalling Halloween costumes. “North Tower” and “South Tower,” as they called themselves, even took home a £150 ($240) prize for their creativity.

The 19-year-olds — which means they were 7 at time of the attack — apologized “if any offence was caused,” but insisted, “The idea was to depict a serious, modern-day horror that happened in our lifetime and was not intended as a joke.” It’s all very serious, obviously. (The father of one happens to be a pilot and promised to “have a little chat.”)

But we might as well cancel Halloween next year, because all of the most offensive costumes have now been used up.
