Just a day after the Washington Post reported that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency is trying to create a national database of license-plate tracking information to help catch undocumented immigrants, the Homeland Security Department announced the plan has been canceled. ICE spokeswoman Gillian Christensen said the contract solicitation was “posted without the awareness of ICE leadership,” adding, “While we continue to support a range of technologies to help meet our law enforcement mission, this solicitation will be reviewed to ensure the path forward appropriately meets our operational needs.” And presumably, to ensure that ICE doesn’t get dragged into the NSA scandal.
