Ed Koch, best known as the mayor of 1980s New York, faced an international assassination plot when he served as a congressman before that, something he never spoke much about. On Tuesday, Politico magazine delved into the little-known plot by a Uruguayan government bent on stopping his campaign to halt aid to Southern Cone human-rights abusers. “Fatalism and dry humor would be his only weapons against whatever stood against him,” as the FBI and NYPD declined to protect him. The whole thing makes House of Cards look downright tame.
