89-year-old Lotte Fields, who died last summer, regularly donated to the New York Public Library, albeit “modestly.” But on Wednesday, NYPL president Tony Marx announced that he was “astounded” to learn that Fields had left his organization $6 million in her will. Her executor explained the massive gift thusly: “One of her great joys was spending the weekend reading with her husband. Her donation shows just how much Lotte loved books and how important she felt it was to support her fellow book lovers.” It’s nice when people keep it simple.
