J.D. Winteregg is a tea-party candidate hoping to beat House Speaker John Boehner in the upcoming GOP primary election in Ohio’s 8th congressional district. His chances aren’t great, so he probably should have taken his gig as an adjunct professor at a Christian college into account when he was putting together his latest campaign ad. Alas, the temptation to mock his opponent’s last name proved too great, and Winteregg has now been fired.
To his credit, Winteregg went full eighth grade class clown in the one-minute video, which is a parody of erectile dysfunction medication advertisements. See, Winteregg is peddling a cure for “electile dysfunction,” which happens when “a politician has been in D.C. for too long” and “it goes to his head,” leaving him unable “to get the job done.” “If you have a Boehner lasting longer than 23 years, seek immediate medical attention,” the narrator advises. And, just in case the people watching at home somehow didn’t get it, the spot ends with footage of Boehner on the very special day that he made his own “boner” quip.
“Cedarville University does not engage in partisan politics and holds a high regard for displaying Christian values in the community,” said a statement released by Winteregg’s now former employer on Monday. “When faculty or staff members participate in political conversations, interviews, advertisements, or endorsements, they are doing so as individual citizens. Mr. Winteregg in his recent political campaign video did not represent the views or values of Cedarville University.” Winteregg later confirmed that he has not been invited to teach any classes at Cedarville next semester. “The ad obviously touched a nerve,” he explained. That’s enough, young man.
