Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Monday that while he intends to ban horse-drawn carriages from Central Park, he has no problem with horses in the NYPD’s mounted unit roaming all over the city. “It’s apples and oranges … I have immense respect for what (the NYPD does) to keep us safe, and the police horses have been a part of that,” the mayor told a Daily News reporter. “(The mounted unit) is something that’s about the public’s vital interests. So I think it’s a very different reality than something that’s about tourism.” Humiliating tourists is one thing, but he’s not going to force the NYPD to ride around in old-timey electric cars.
