Note to Tourists: No More Romantic Padlocks on the Brooklyn Bridge, Please

Lovestruck couples who make a public statement about their unbreakable bond by affixing locks to the Brooklyn Bridge are costing the city money and creating distractions for drivers, says the Department of Transportation. The city wants them to stop. The DOT has removed 5,600 locks from the bridge since last July, and a spokeswoman told the Daily News that the locks’ weight has required parts of the bridge to be replaced. Left unchecked, starry-eyed couples will overrun the Brooklyn Bridge with cliché symbols of love like the lock-infested ponts of Paris. They must be stopped.
