Guccifer, the Hacker Who Showed the World George W. Bush’s Paintings, Gets 4 Years in Romanian Prison

Password-cracker of the rich and the famous Marcel Lazar Lehel, better known as Guccifer, was sentenced on Friday to four years in jail for his computer crimes following a months-long tear last year through the email accounts of the Bushes, the Clintons, their powerful friends, and Candace Bushnell. The resulting disclosures were often entertaining but largely harmless — Colin Powell may disagree — and Guccifer reportedly downplayed his hacks in court, insisting, “Everybody got their email account hacked at one point or another.”

While Guccifer was nailed in Romania for targeting political figures there, Reuters reports no signs of a potential extradition to the U.S. By gifting everyday Americans a shower self-portrait of an ex-president, however, his work will live on here forever.
