NBC New York reports that a large “wide-mouthed fish,” believed to have been a great white shark, “sidled up” to a fishing boat 15 miles off Fire Island last Sunday. Add that to the great whites spotted (and caught) off Cape May and Rockaway Beach over that same weekend and you get three scary sightings in the waters surrounding New York and New Jersey in one week. Three, of course, is a trend, which means Shark Summer is officially upon us. But don’t just take our word for it: “I think their numbers are increasing, so we are going to see more of them,” said the Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center’s Phil Argiros, who attributed the situation to conservation efforts. “I think people should actually enjoy this instead of being afraid,” he added. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
