Usually reserved entirely for beefcakes, the 2015 edition of the FDNY Calendar of Heroes features a woman for the first time ever. “They said if I made it in the calendar, I would look like a pinup girl,” Danae Mines, one of only a few dozen female firefighters in New York, told the Daily News. “I wasn’t going to let anyone tell me I couldn’t do what I wanted to do.”
“I wanted my picture in the calendar so that young girls and young women can see me and know that they can do this job,” said the 11-year department veteran, who, like the guys, was shot by celebrity photographer Patrick McMullan. “I love the picture they took, and I love the month,” she added. “It’s Women’s History Month.”
