As part of its takeover of Mosul last month, Iraq’s peskiest Sunni militant group ISIS stole 88 pounds of uranium from Mosul University. The nuclear material, which Iraq’s U.N. ambassador fears could be “used in manufacturing weapons of mass destruction,” was used for research purposes at the university. If ISIS’s in-house evil geniuses are planning to turn this uranium into nukes, they’ve got quite a long slog ahead of them. According to the IAEA, the uranium is “low grade” and does not “present a significant safety, security or nuclear proliferation risk.”
