More Than 60 Kidnapped Nigerian Girls Have Reportedly Escaped Boko Haram

Almost three months after they were kidnapped from their school in Chibok, Nigeria, by the militant group Boko Haram, 63 girls fled their captors and returned home over the weekend, the Agence France-Presse reports. An unnamed “high-level security source” and a senior member of a local vigilante group, Abbas Gava, confirmed the escape to reporters, though they didn’t offer many details on how exactly the girls got away. “They took the bold step when their abductors moved out to carry out an operation,” said Gava. Though 150 victims of the April 15 abduction remain missing, this is still way more good news than most people had come to expect from this story since it became clear that the well-intentioned hashtag campaign wasn’t helping much.
