More than 20 consecutive rulings across the country this year have found gay marriage bans unconstitutional and today in Virginia was no different. A federal appeals court refused to delay a decision announced last month overturning the state’s 2006 ban, meaning same-sex marriages could start next week unless the Supreme Court steps in. Unfortunately, that decision falls to Chief Justice John Roberts, who represents Virginia’s Fourth Circuit, so don’t get too excited just yet.
