While some West Nile–carrying mosquitoes were discovered in New York City back in July, it took until now for them to pass the virus along to local people. On Monday, the Health Department confirmed five human cases of the disease: two in Brooklyn, and one each in Queens, Staten Island, and Manhattan. The good news? Only three of those patients had to be hospitalized, and they have already been discharged. Still, we’d recommend that you avoid standing water at least until the leaves start to change.
