The American Suspected of Running ISIS’s Social Media Went to Northeastern

In this economy, getting a good job straight out of college isn’t a guarantee. Instead, many millennial college grads start out running social-media accounts for corporations with the hopes of moving up the ranks into editorial or marketing. Or, if you’re 32-year-old former Northeastern student Ahmad Abousamra, you move to Syria and (allegedly) run social media for ISIS.

Abousamra hails from Boston and was placed on the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorists list last year. In 2009, the FBI indicted Abousamra for conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists; providing and attempting to provide material support to terrorists; conspiracy to kill in a foreign country; conspiracy; and false statements,” according to the FBI

Now, according to ABC News, officials suspect Abousamra is using his computer skills to work as ISIS’s head of social media, helping spread propaganda over social networks like Twitter to convince Westerners to go fight for ISIS. He reportedly has a high-pitched voice, so now you can imagine ISIS tweets being read by George Michael Bluth.

Correction: An earlier version of this story said Abousamra graduated from Northeastern; he attended the university, but never graduated.
