After he was criticized for his lackluster response to the grand jury’s decision on Darren Wilson last week, on Monday President Obama announced a proposal to provide millions to outfit police with body cameras and spent the rest of the day taking meetings about the unrest over police brutality. According to Politico, he considered a far bolder move: traveling to Missouri to speak about the situation from Ferguson. Following talks with top advisers, the idea was reportedly dropped because of concerns about staging and diverting police resources from the protests. “It’s complicated, a high wire,” a White House official said. “We have done complicated trips before. But for us, it is more of a substantive way to take the challenges head-on.” Last week a White House spokesman said they’re just waiting until “things calm down a little bit,” so a visit may still be on the table.
