In the past few days, the leaders of several New York police unions have said that to resolve his rift with the NYPD, Mayor Bill de Blasio should “humble” himself and apologize to police. Similarly, a Daily News editorial said de Blasio made various comments that “conveyed that he views the NYPD as infected by racial animosity,” and “if those be his beliefs, mayoral duty calls on de Blasio to reconsider, clarify and apologize.” At a press conference on Wednesday, de Blasio said that while nothing was resolved during his meeting last week with police union leaders, he’s willing to talk with them again. However, when asked if he would apologize for any of his previous remarks, the mayor declined. “I respect the question but the construct is about the past and I just don’t want to do that,” he said. “I think this is about moving forward.”
