Lassana Bathily, the 24-year-old Malian Muslim who saved multiple hostages during the siege on Paris’s Hyper Cacher supermarket last Friday by hiding them in a food freezer, has been awarded French citizenship. His application was fast-tracked after his heroic actions, and the official ceremony will take place next week. “I helped Jews. We’re all brothers,” Bathily told a local TV station. “It’s not a question of Jews, Christians or Muslims, we’re all in the same boat.” Too bad that new passport won’t also shield him from French Islamophobia or racism.
