Last week, New York’s Chris Smith reported that Mayor Bill de Blasio is planning to insert himself into the 2016 presidential campaign to promote progressive issues. However, according to the New York Post, after just 16 months in office, the mayor has set his sights much, much higher. “With [Elizabeth] Warren saying she’s not running, de Blasio and his advisers are trying to position the mayor as the ‘draft’ candidate for the left in 2016. That’s why he refused to endorse Hillary last week,” claims a “national party operative,” who says the mayor’s model is 1972 Democratic presidential nominee George McGovern. Iowans currently think de Blasio is the guy who “outlawed the large sodas,” so the mayor has a lot of work to do if he wants to give Republicans a landslide victory.
