UVA Dean Writes Scathing Open Letter to Rolling Stone

Nicole Eramo, the University of Virginia associate dean of students included in Rolling Stone’s highly flawed “A Rape on Campus” story, fired back at the magazine today in an open letter that says the story “deeply damaged me both personally and professionally.”

Eramo disputes Rolling Stone’s assertion that she discouraged Jackie from reporting her rape to the authorities, instead writing that she immediately suggested bringing the incident to the police, but Jackie declined. She also says the article, which a Columbia Journalism School report deemed a “journalistic failure,” caused her to receive rape and death threats, and to have her name smeared in the national press.

All of this could have been easily avoided, Eramo writes, if the magazine’s “reporters, editors and fact checkers had not made a calculated decision not to contact sources who would have contradicted Rolling Stone’s preconceived story line.”
