“There’s no sugar-coating it,” the two people spearheading “Run Warren Run” conceded in Politico Magazine on Tuesday. “We didn’t achieve our central goal.”
And, as a result, the group that refused to acknowledge that Senator Elizabeth Warren doesn’t want to talk about running for president has decided to explore other interests, including convincing other Democratic presidential candidates that they should just morph into the Massachusetts senator, Face-off style. On June 8, Run Warren Run will officially disband and stop providing the 2016 election cycle’s most imaginative fanfic — but not before the group delivers one last petition to her office, complete with 365,000 signatures, begging her to run.
Judging from past precedent, the petition will not change anything. However, life hasn’t completely killed the dream that progressives dreamed. Ready for Warren, yet another pro–Elizabeth Warren 2016 group, has no plans to disband yet. And Run Warren Run organizers are ready to reenlist in the good fight if needed. It’s not totally clear whether Warren is running for president, right?
“If she chooses to reconsider, due to shifting circumstances or a new intuition,” the organizers conclude, “the movement that urged her to run could regroup at a moment’s notice.” And in case that wasn’t clear enough, Democracy for America executive director Charles Chamberlain followed up with Politico to add, “We still think there’s plenty of time for Sen. Warren to change her mind.”
