The Boy Scouts of America is expected to announce tomorrow that it will end its ban on gay leaders within the organization, though individual (volunteer) Scout groups will still be able to reject gay Scout leaders if they want, a loophole the New York Times characterizes as a move “to gain the acquiescence of conservative religious groups that sponsor many dens and troops.” Gay Scouts have been officially allowed since 2013, but the organization-wide ban on gay adult leaders had remained in place. In response to possible lawsuits, the Scouts will also bar discrimination based on sexual orientation in paid positions and at all official Boy Scout facilities.
