Florida Man Who’s Also a Star Player for the New York Giants Injures Hand With Fireworks

Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul did some serious damage to one of his hands on Saturday in a fireworks accident. The Giants’ defensive leader has burns on three fingers and may also have nerve damage, according to ESPN, which reported that the injuries should result in “no permanent damage or disfigurement of his hands.” That contradicts a tweet sent last night from a Miami sports-radio host, who said the 26-year-old was still in the hospital and that his “Hand injury [is] so severe, he could still possibly lose it.”

Pierre-Paul, who hasn’t signed the $14.8 million one-year deal the Giants offered by using the franchise tag on him, is not under contract at the moment. That made last weekend a particularly bad time to go nuts with a U-Haul full of fireworks. But according to his neighbors, that’s just what he did. Yesterday Deadspin found some now-deleted tweets from neighbors that include pictures of a U-Haul van full of fireworks. And here he is with his infant son singing in front of said U-Haul.

Pierre-Paul has until July 15 to work out a long-term deal with the Giants, or that one-year franchise contract kicks in and he’ll become a free agent next season. The Giants could also rescind the one-year offer, but that’s unlikely.
