Nearly 2,000 people playing hooky at Tobay Beach on Long Island were forced from the water this afternoon by two or three menacing sharks swimming some 15 feet offshore. Lifeguards first spotted the sharks around noon and evacuated the water, then police flew by in helicopters trying to spot them. Two hours later, the sharks had moved far enough east that swimmers were allowed to continue swimming. No one was eaten.
